Meeting With Abigail Shervington (Curator/Researcher)

Notes and Advice:

  • Make up my own story – based on information I do know
  • Stepping into the unknown, take photography to different places
  • He may still be in the area.
  • If he lived a big chunk of his life in Croydon, Croydon is his home, will find more information here, and information will be easier to access.
  • Easter is a good time to go to Guyana
  • Go interview people
  • Hard to describe that level of emotion, have to some how put that in image, consider moving image.
  • Look at the making process, it may be more powerful then the body of work.
  • Consider the extra elements that go into work.
  • Tune into my nans emotions and my mums and re-create or capture in a way that’s going to tell that story.
  • Guilt from kids – there was a reason why Nan married him, find out why.
  • Story of migration, because he had a life before he got to England, what was he rooted in, did he feel like England was his home? Nothing wrong with being a lot of questions. More questions I ask ill get more answers. What bought him here? How was he introduced to England what was the job prospects for here, how long had he been here before he met my Nan.
  • Because of time people came over he would have been here for a little bit already
  • Did he work on the ships? – if he worked on ships Abigails dad may know him.
  • More common to see a mixed relationships in the 60s so consider this in the story.
  • Need to be record of when he came to this country – find out when he came here (year)
  • Sound bits like instillation will be the best way of displaying work.
  • Guyana changing into the whirlwind and I don’t where its been/going but its never ending
  • Should have that open ending, leave the audience questioning
  • Doesn’t have to look like its complete, its an on-going project and may never end
  • Create something circular – where’s the beginning, where the end
  • Make a maze
  • Curations should reflect the process
  • Emotion needs to be a big key feature
  • Focus on memory heritage and identity
